Program Overview
UTEP’s Computational Science Program offers both MS and PhD degrees. The program strives to train students in applying modern methods of mathematical modelling and computer simulation to solve complex problems in various areas of science and engineering. Graduates will be able to assess the validity of computational models and reliability of numerical methods.
For the MS degree, the program provides
- an academic track designed for those who would continue to pursue further studies, with a thesis option requiring a mandatory thesis and a non-thesis option of taking a comprehensive exit exam instead
- a professional track with a mandatory internship for those planning to join the workforce immediately upon graduation.
For the PhD degree, students will receive an in-depth training of mathematical modeling for scientific and engineering problems, analyses of computational models and algorithms, and computer simulation techniques. After passing a two-part qualifying examination (Exam I on theory and Exam II on skills), each student will conduct a research project and write a dissertation.
