Voice Brain and Language Lab
The Voice Brain and Language Lab is dedicated to studying the recovery of auditory comprehension in individuals with aphasia following a stroke or other brain damage. We also examine other cognitive processes such as attention. Our laboratory has the resources for doing ERP including the ability to analyze the raw EEG and produce cortical activation maps. The overarching purpose of our aphasia studies is to understand the neural processes underlying the recovery of aphasia.
The other area of research that is currently being undertaken in the Voice Brain and Language Lab is Transgender Voice Management. This study examines voice therapy outcomes in transgender individuals following voice therapy. The purpose of our Transgender Voice Clinic is to find effective voice treatments that will result in a voice that matches the individual’s identified gender, thus enhancing the lives of transgender individuals living in our community.
Individuals that would like to participate in any of our aphasia or transgender voice management research studies may contact Dr. Lara at plara2@utep for further information.
Undergraduate and graduate students that wish to volunteer in the Voice Brain and Language Lab may contact the laboratory director, Dr. Patricia Lara, via e-mail at plara2@utep.edu
Student volunteers must be in good academic standing and be available a minimum of 10 hours a week to participate in the Voice Brain and Language Lab.
