A Message from the Director

Welcome to the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts at The Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Texas at El Paso, where contemporary art connects our borderlands community to global conversations. As a center dedicated to showcasing innovative, thought-provoking work, we are proud to be a hub for international contemporary art, fostering cultural exchange and creative dialogue between artists, audiences, and ideas.

At the Rubin Center, we believe in the transformative power of art to challenge perceptions, ignite conversations, and inspire change. Our exhibitions feature a dynamic range of artists whose work reflects diverse perspectives from across the globe, with a special emphasis on the unique narratives and voices of our border region. From large-scale installations to experimental projects, we provide a platform for art that speaks to the complexities of our time.

In the 2025-26 academic year, we are proud to showcase MUD+CORN+STONE+BLUE curated by Dr. Laura Augusta and co-produced with Independent Curators International. Told through a constellation of places and temporal back-and-forths, MUD+CORN+STONE+BLUE hinges on major conflicts that have scarred Central America since the 1960s and how their histories are entwined with that of U.S. agriculture, specifically looking at the corn industry. The exhibition draws parallels between the U.S. farming recession and conflicts in Central America, showing overlapping political and economic decisions around farming practices, ideas of land ownership and stewardship, migrant labor, and agricultural export. In an effort to increase/deepen audience interaction with this historical revision, we are lengthening the exhibition’s duration.MUD+CORN+STONE+BLUE will run for nine months: during this time, we are inviting five artists to do short-term (2-3 week) residencies at the Rubin, in which they present publicly about their work, engage students, local artists and local audiences through workshops, and visit local sites relevant to their practices.

We are also deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of leaders in contemporary art and museums. Our competitive, paid internship program is designed for students from our bilingual and multicultural borderlands, equipping them with hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. By providing real-world training in exhibition development, curatorial research, and museum operations, we prepare students to excel in their future careers while also addressing the critical need for greater diversity in the museum field.

Whether you are an artist, student, educator, or art enthusiast, we invite you to explore all that the Rubin Center has to offer. Join us as we celebrate the power of contemporary art to transcend borders, build connections, and inspire new ways of seeing the world.

Sincerely,

Kerry Doyle

Where Contemporary Art Meets Contemporary Life

MISSION

The Rubin Center for the Visual Arts is a bridge between the university and the world beyond its walls. The Center supports artist-led and community-centered explorations of contemporary life from the US-Mexico border. Through rigorous and risk-taking programs, exhibitions, and performances, the Center invites dialogue between diverse publics —campus and community, local and international— across disciplines and geographies. We serve as a dynamic training ground for a new generation of creative practitioners who are expanding the ways that artists can exist in the world.
