Course Development
Offering high-quality, educational, and engaging courses is the cornerstone to an effective online program. Most importantly, we need to ensure that courses are designed to maximize students' learning potential and that they are accessible to all learners. We also want to ensure that courses are effectively designed to help student navigate the materials and assignments affectively and have a positive learning experience. To help faculty teach effective online courses, we offer instructional design resources to all faculty for new course development, redesign of existing courses, or compression of a long-semester course to a part of term.
Once a new program is marketed and recruitment has begun, the Center for Instructional Design (CID) will assist program faculty in the development of their courses for online delivery.
Course Development Process
The Center for Instructional Design (CID) will provide support in all aspects of the development process.
- Instructors must complete the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Course Development Agreement prior to beginning course development with their assigned instructional designer.
- Instructors must complete the Teaching Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Academy (TOA) prior to course launch unless otherwise noted.
- Instructors will collaborate with the Center for Instructional Design (CID) to ensure courses are in alignment with university policies, accessibility guidelines and online best practices.
- CID will contact the instructor 6 to 8 weeks before the course starts to begin course development.
- Once the course is completed, CID will give the department chair access to the course.
- The department chair will review the course and email CID with approval.
The CID team is focused on providing research-based best practices in instructional design and development as well as instructional technology solutions that can help faculty members and instructors maximize their students’ learning experiences.
CID instructional designers are available to consult with faculty and staff and ensure that
- Course design meets SACSCOC and UTEP standards for quality
- Course materials meet both standards of copyright and ADA compliance as required by SACSCOC and federal law
- Courses are well-aligned, well-developed, and engaging
The CID team also trains faculty on emerging technologies and instructional resources used to effectively manage or enhance all types of teaching.
Trainings
Teaching Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Academy (TOA)
Faculty new to online teaching must complete the TOA. This is a four-week, asynchronous, facilitated online course. Faculty will learn best practices for teaching an online class. We recommend faculty take the TOA the semester prior to working on their course. Faculty can sign up on .
CID Trainings
These trainings are offered throughout the academic year and help instructors keep abreast of new technologies and pedagogical research. Faculty can sign up on Campus Edge Support for Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Learning.
