The Teacher Education Department in UTEP’s College of Education offers the Bachelor of Science in Education [BSED] degree for those seeking to become teachers within Texas public schools, Early Childhood Education settings or in educational venues throughout the community. Our top-notch faculty are ready to teach, mentor, and guide you as you learn the art of teaching. UTEP’s preparation program provides high-impact curricula and clinical experiences – all toward the goal of positively impacting educational outcomes for children and families in our region and beyond.
BSED Concentration Options
The Teacher Education Department offers two major concentrations for those individuals who are seeking to become Bachelor-level teachers outside of public schools:
- Early Childhood Care & Education (Birth to Age 5) [BSED-ECCE]
- Education & Community Studies [BSED-EDCS].
Through the Educator Preparation Program (EPP), the Teacher Education Department offers two major concentrations for those individuals who are seeking to become certified Texas Public School Teachers at the elementary level:
- Elementary (EC-6) with ESL Certification [EESL]
- Elementary (EC-6) with Bilingual Certification [EBIL]
Through the Educator Preparation Program (EPP), the Teacher Education Department offers six major concentrations for those individuals who are seeking to become certified Texas Public School Teachers at the middle school level:
- Middle Grades (4-8) English Language Arts/Reading with ESL Certification [MLES]
- Middle Grades (4-8) English Language Arts/Reading and Social Studies with ESL Certification [MLSS]
- Middle Grades (4-8) Mathematics with ESL Certification [MMAE]
- Middle Grades (4-8) Mathematics and Science with ESL Certification [MMSC]
- Middle Grades (4-8) with ESL Supplemental Certification [MESL]
- Middle Grades (4-8) with Bilingual Certification [MBIL]
Through the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) and in conjunction with another College of Education department, the Teacher Education Department offers one major concentration for those individuals who are seeking to become certified Texas Public School Teachers in All-level Special Education:
- Pk-12 Special Education [ASPE]
Secondary and All-Level
The Teacher Education Department offers a minor in Secondary Education for those individuals interested in teaching at the Secondary-Level or in All-Level Education. Students who are interested in becoming a high school or all-level Texas Certified Teacher major in the content area they will teach (for example, if wanting to teach All-Level Art, a student would major in Art within the College of Liberal Arts and then pursue a minor in Secondary Education within the College of Education).

Miner Teacher Residency
The UTEP College of Education, in partnership with local districts, is now offering teacher candidates who are pursuing elementary or middle school certification the opportunity to engage in a year-long, coaching-intensive, paid student-teaching experience, called the Miner Teacher Residency.
