Graduate Certificate in K-12 English Learning (ESL)

The Graduate Certificate in K-12 ESL is a fully online, 12 credit program that provides intensive training for educators to serve K-12 emergent bilingual students (English learners) in ESL classrooms, as well as in other content-area classrooms. Coursework in this certificate program emphasizes the practical application of current theory, research, and pedagogy in ESL instruction, with particular attention to second language acquisition processes, linguistic diversity, translanguaging pedagogy, and the design and implementation of culturally sustaining ESL curriculum and practices. This program provides the content knowledge base needed for currently certified elementary, middle school and high school teachers who wish to seek State of Texas English as a Second Language (ESL) Supplemental Certification. [All courses in the Graduate Certificate in K-12 ESL may be applied to the M.Ed. in Bilingual Education.]

Admission Requirements:
To apply for the Graduate Certificate in K-12 ESL program, individuals must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and they must complete the application process through UTEP’s Graduate School. Prospective students submit:
1) a resume;
2) a written statement of purpose describing personal and professional goals related to obtaining the certificate; and
3) transcripts from all previous colleges and universities attended; transcripts should indicate at least a minimum satisfactory undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
The admission materials submitted will be reviewed holistically to assess the potential of the applicant for this advance course of study. The successful applicant would typically have an undergraduate upper division GPA of 3.0 or higher that demonstrates focus on academics, a current resume that demonstrates basic knowledge or experience in education or education-related fields, and a written statement that demonstrates maturity and commitment to the field of ESL Education.
Program Application Deadlines (Spring Start Only):
- To begin in Spring Semester, applications must be received by January 5th.

Certificate Requirements and Courses:
To earn a Graduate Certificate in K-12 ESL, UTEP requires for graduation: 1) successful completion of 12 hours of required coursework with a grade of “B” or better; and 2) a final GPA of 3.0 or higher [Graduate School Requirement].
