Capstone Experiences
A capstone experience integrates coursework, knowledge, skills, and experiential learning to enable students to demonstrate a broad mastery of learning across the curriculum for further career advancement. A capstone experience allows a student to reflect on the entire student experience and provides a level of independent decision-making that will prepare students to articulate skills and experiences relevant to the complex world of life after college.
Examples of capstone experiences include:
- portfolio
- senior project
- thesis
- comprehensive examination
- practicum
- internship
- field experience or clinical assignment
- study abroad
A capstone experience typically involves students:
- selecting a topic, which is approved by faculty
- integrating knowledge and skills gained through previous coursework
- bridging coursework with career pathway
- reflecting on the social context or the conceptual framework to which the capstone work poses a contribution
- producing a tangible product to be presented or reviewed by faculty (e.g., written work, oral presentation)
