- To remote connect to a computer, you will first need the name of your work computer. First, Click the Start button and then click on the Settings ‘gear’ icon.
- Once the Windows Settings window opens, click the System tile.
- Scroll to the bottom of the menu in the left column and click About.
- In the main window, your work computer’s name is listed under the Device
Specifications section as Device name. Please save this information for later
when you are at home trying to connect to your work PC
Step 4.- Enabling Remote Desktop
- Remote Desktop needs to be enabled. Here is how to check if it is enabled or not, and how to enable it if needed. If you cannot enable Remote Desktop, please contact the TaCC Lab at calclab@utep.edu and include your work PC name for assistance. First, Click the Start button and then click on the Settings ‘gear’ icon.

- Once the Windows Settings window opens, click the System tile.
- Scroll to the bottom of the menu in the left column and click on Power & Sleep. et the Sleep setting to Never.
Step 6.- Connecting to the Computer
- Connect to the UTEP VPN.
- Launch the Remote Desktop Connection software from your home PC. You can find this
Windows program by searching for it, or under the Windows Accessories menu in the Windows
10 Start menu. - When you are asked for your credentials, use the miners\username format or your log in will
fail. After entering your credentials, click the OK button to connect.
After authenticating successfully, you should be connected to your work desktop and be able to see the
desktop just like you were at work and access the local files. When you are finished working remotely,
make sure that you sign out or disconnect your session and DO NOT shut down the PC. If you shut
down the PC, then you will not be able to log in to it again and will have to visit the office to manually
turn it back on.
