MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS WITH DATA ANALYTICS

 

The Master of Science in Economics with Data Analytics provides students with a theoretical foundation in economic concepts, as well as hands-on experience with large datasets and statistical software packages, including STATA, R, and Python, used in the public and private sectors.

Upon completion of the 32-hour program, students will earn a Master of Science in Economics and a Graduate Certificate in Big Data Analytics.

Courses below marked with a * are counted as part of the Graduate Certificate in Big Data Analytics.

ECON CORE COURSES  – 15 Credit Hours

ECON 5302: Microeconomic Theory

The determination of prices and output. The theory of markets ranging from perfect competition through monopolistic competition and oligopoly to monopoly. The theory of the firm and the industry. Welfare implications of the price determination.

ECON 5303: Macroeconomic Theory

The analysis of the determination of total income in the economy and related problems. Strong emphasis is given to the theory of money, and the relationship between government policy and economic activity.

ECON 5305: Applied Mathematical Economics*

A problem-oriented survey of the mathematical techniques utilized in economics, finance, and public policy analysis. Topics to be covered include matrix algebra, optimization problems, comparative statics, dynamics, and game theory. The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the quantitative methods necessary to understand the current literature in Economics and Finance.

ECON 5370: Applied Econometrics*

Linear and nonlinear regression methodologies, elementary time series analysis, and other introductory econometric topics will be treated. The course is designed to provide basic expertise in the application of econometric techniques to hypothesis testing, model building, diagnostic testing, and simulation analysis.

Course Description
ECON 5371: Econometric Forecasting* Econometric Forecasting A survey of univariate time series, single equation, and multi-equation systems approaches to applied econometric forecasting analysis. Topics to be covered include autoregressive-moving storage average (ARIMA) modeling, model identification, estimation, diagnostic checking and out-of-sample simulation. Applications will be drawn from Latin American business conditions, exchange rate, inflation, national income, and balance of payments forecasting methods.
Section Description
ECON 5372: Panel Data & Discrete Choice Models* This course provides an introduction to panel data plus binary and multiple-outcome qualitative response econometric methods. Panel topics to be covered are fixed effects and random-effects. Discrete choice qualitative response topics to be covered include linear probability, probit, logit, ordered logit, nested logit, and multinomial logit models.

STATISTICS COURSES  – 8 Credit Hours

STAT 5329: Statistical Programming*

Introduction to statistical programming using statistical software packages such as R, SAS or Python. Emphasis on methods of data entry, data management, and creation of statistical reports. Topics covered include data manipulation, creation of user-defined functions, simulation methods, random variable generation, permutation methods, the bootstrap, the jackknife and methods of increasing computational efficiency.

STAT 5474: Introduction to Data Mining*

Introduction to techniques for data mining and analytics with emphasis on R programming and hands-on experience with real data; topics covered: dimension reduction, cluster analysis, ordinary and partial least squares regression, principal components regression, ridge regression, l1-regularization, logistic regression, assessment of classifier, decision/regression trees, bagging and boosting, random forests, and data visualization techniques.

STAT 5195: Graduate Seminar*

Conferences and discussions of various topics in mathematics and statistics by faculty, graduate students, and outside speakers. Required of all graduate students during each semester of full-time enrollment.
