Four New Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty Join COBA
As the Fall 2019 semester gears up, a new crop of educators join the ranks of tenured and tenured-track faculty at The Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Texas at El Paso and the Woody L. Hunt College of Business.
At Woody L. Hunt College of Business, four individuals have joined the faculty. Check out their bios below, which include their research interests, publication history and some of their hobbies.
John Gibson
Associate Professor, Department of Economics and Finance
Dr. Gibson comes to UTEP with a background in macroeconomic modeling, computational methods, and financial and monetary economics. His research interests include measuring the economic and social impact of public policies such as infrastructure investment and public debt issuance, and investigating the important role played by real-world frictions related to both labor and credit markets. Dr. Gibson’s work has been published in leading economic journals including Journal of Money, Credit & Banking, Journal of Economic Dynamics & Control, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, and Economic Inquiry, among others. Prior to UTEP, Dr. Gibson served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Georgia State Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é. He received his doctoral degree in economics from Florida State Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é, where he was awarded the Piette Dissertation Award, and the Irvine and Peggy Sobel Award for overall academic achievement. He is a member of the American Economic Association, Econometric Society, Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association, and the Southern Economic Association. He is currently a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and consultant to the GMF Latin American Division of the World Bank. During his leisure time, Dr. Gibson enjoys playing music with family and friends, and watching college and professional football.
Cynthia Halliday
Assistant Professor, Department of Marketing and Management
Dr. Halliday comes to UTEP from Florida International Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é (FIU), with a research focus on leadership, workplace social exchanges, international human resource management, and gender and diversity. She has taught courses in Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, and International Management. Dr. Halliday earned her doctoral degree from FIU, where she was awarded with the Dissertation Year Fellowship. Prior to FIU, she was the managing director of the Center for International Business Education and Research at Brigham Young Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é, and spent several years in corporate management working for multinational organizations such as Nestlé USA, Nutraceutical Corporation, and International Flavors and Fragrances. She has published in Human Resource Management, and her research has resulted in a number of presentations at conferences such as the Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and Southern Management Association. Dr. Halliday enjoys traveling and spending time with her family; and she is also an avid genealogist. She is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Yun Ke
Assistant Professor, Department of Accounting and Information Systems
Dr. Ke comes to UTEP from Brock Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é where he served as assistant professor at the Goodman School of Business. He has a teaching background in financial and managerial accounting, and a research interest in financial analyst and corporate governance. Dr. Ke earned his first doctoral degree in geophysics from Washington Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é in St. Louis, and a second doctoral degree in accounting from the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of British Columbia, where he was nominated for the Commerce Undergraduate Society Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Ke is a member of the American Accounting Association, and the Canadian Academic Accounting Association. For leisure, Dr. Ke enjoys traveling, hiking, and watching different types of sports.
Linh Rachel Thompson
Assistant Professor, Department of Economics and Finance
Dr. Thompson joins UTEP from the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of South Florida, where she earned her doctoral degree in finance, and served as an instructor in the areas of Principles of Investment, Principles of Finance, and Advanced Corporate Finance. She is primarily interested in empirical corporate finance and behavioral finance. Dr. Thompson’s work has been published in the Journal of Money Credit and Banking, and in Contemporary Accounting Research. She co-authored the manuscript, "Stock Market Anomalies and Baseball Cards", which was presented at the 2018 American Finance Association annual meeting, a pre-eminent conference for finance researchers.
