General Election Rules (Applicable to Both Special and General Elections)

Filing Process:

• Current UTEP students may file for elections by completing the following:
  1. Submit an application via MineTracker.
  2. Pick up and return required forms at the Student Government office (Union East 304):
     • Financial Disclosure Form
     • Candidate Endorsement Form (optional)
     • Violation Complaint Form (optional)
  3. Attend the mandatory Candidate Information Session. If a candidate cannot attend, they must meet with the SGA Election Commissioners prior to Elections Week.

Positions Available:

• General Election:

  • President
  • Vice-President of External Affairs
  • Vice-President of Internal Affairs
  • Senator at-Large (16)
  • Collegiate Senators (8) from: Liberal Arts, Engineering, Science, Business, Health Science, Nursing, Education, and Graduate programs.

• Special Election:

  • Specific positions will vary depending on vacancies at the time of the election.

Campaign Regulations:

• All campaign materials must be approved by the Student Government Association Election Advisor or Election Commissioners before being posted or distributed.
• Copies of all campaign materials must be filed with the Student Government Association.
• Campaign materials must adhere to Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é and Election Code policies.

Election Infractions:

• Students can submit a Violation Complaint Form if they believe election policies are not being followed. All complaints must be submitted before the end of the election period.

Endorsements:

• Each campus organization may endorse only one candidate.
• Candidates may receive as many endorsements as desired, and endorsements must be submitted through the proper channels.

Expenditures:

• Campaign expenditures are limited:
  • $100 for Executive officer candidates
  • $75 for Senate candidates
• Campaign materials in the form of buttons, stickers, and business cards are allowed, but they must be approved and filed with the Student Government Association.

Additional Information:

• Only currently enrolled students may vote.
• All candidates and election procedures must follow Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Policy and the SGA Election Code.

Unique Aspects for General Elections:

• The general election typically involves a full set of positions for the upcoming academic year.
• Election week occurs once annually and allows students to vote for a wide range of positions.
• Terms of office typically begin on a set date and end on May 31 of the following year.

Unique Aspects for Special Elections:

• Special elections are conducted to fill vacancies that arise between general election cycles.
• The positions available in special elections are typically limited to those vacated, and terms may be shorter than those for general elections.
