Graduate Admission
Requirements for Admission:
1. Admission is based on the entire record of the applicant and availability of departmental resources.
2. Students must submit a completed admissions form to the UTEP graduate school, including references and statement of purpose, as well as all university transcripts.
The statement of purpose should respond to the following questions, allowing up to 250 words for each separate response.Why are you interested in Sociology? Which specific research areas in Sociology are you most interested in and why? What are your academic and professional goals? How will earning a MA in Sociology prepare you to achieve those goals?
What strengths do you bring to this graduate program? What else would you like to share with the admissions committee?
3. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. university or proof of equivalent education at a foreign institution. Generally, students should have a 3.0 (B) grade point average, or equivalent, particularly in sociology courses and over the last sixty hours of undergraduate work.
4. The department also grants a limited number of teaching and research assistantships to selected graduate students. Other forms of financial assistance are also available. For further information please contact the graduate advisor.

Students must submit all required documents by July 7th for fall admission, and by November 1st for spring admission.

Financial Aid:
A limited number of Teaching Assistantships are available with a stipend of approximately $10,000 per nine-month academic year. Teaching Assistantships include basic health insurance and a waiver of non-resident tuition. Contact the Graduate School and the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships for more information and applications.
