Funding
Teaching Assistantships will fund at least six Ph.D. students per year which, along with two students funded by grants and endowments, comprise our anticipated early cohorts of eight students per year.
Research Assistantships are supported through extramural grants and faculty-led research projects per year.
UTEP provides tuition remission to doctoral students who:
(a) are enrolled full time,
(b) work 20 hours/week for the entire semester as student employees,
(c) are in good academic standing, and
(d) engage in research/scholarship.
As a state institution, UTEP cannot waive tuition, but our tuition remission program helps offset the cost of tuition. The Graduate School works with many units across campus to provide tuition remission for many of our doctoral students.
- Students appointed as Doctoral Research Associates (RAs) for 20 hours/week for the entire semester will receive full tuition coverage (9SCH/semester) for up to six years. Doctoral students who enter their 7th year in the program are no longer eligible for tuition remission, even if appointed as a Doctoral Research Associate.
- For all other eligible Graduate Student Employee positions (Doctoral Teaching Assistant, Doctoral Assistant Instructor, or Doctoral Assistant), approximately 60% of tuition will be covered for students in years 1-3 of their doctoral program.
- Doctoral tuition remission is provided only during fall and spring semesters.
Some students may enroll in the program without existing scholarships or other sources of funding such as T.A. or R.A. positions.
