To filter out as much spam as possible, IronPort employs an exclusive "Context   Adaptive   Scanning   Engine™" (CASE) to examine the complete context of an email message including:

• Content of the message
• Construction of the message
• Reputation of the message sender
• Reputation of the site from which a message is sent

How Do Spammer's Get My Email Address In The First Place?

• If your email address is not required, then   DO NOT  give it out.  The main way that spammers get email addresses is by you giving it to them.  When you download certain programs, make on-line purchases, or subscribe to services, you are frequently asked for your email address.  Some websites will share your email address with 3 ^rd  party companies who then sell or share you address with spammers.
• Do not publicly post your email address.  Spammers also create " " or " " that look through HTML coding on websites for "mail to" references, which is how web pages handle email links, and then harvest the addresses associated with the “mailto” references.  These bots also look for the "@" sign in newsgroups, chat rooms, blogs, forums, and bulletin boards, and harvest any email addresses they find.
• Do not “unsubscribe” from spam mailing lists.  An easy way for spammers to gather more emails, and to verify the addresses they already have is to create fake “unsubscribe me” links in the spam message they send out.  A lot of spam messages for items such as online pharmaceuticals and discount watches contain unsubscribe links in them that claim to remove your email address from their mailing list.  These links often gather email addresses instead of removing them.  Not all unsubscribe links are bogus – plenty of legitimate mailing lists allow you to unsubscribe – but trying to unsubscribe from spam mailing lists will actually ensure that you receive more.

What Can I Do To Minimize The Spam I Receive?

1. Create filters within your email application, such as Outlook or Eudora.  Filters allow you to auto-delete messages from addresses that send spam.

• Your UTEP email is protected by the IronPort system, but every now and then spam will slip through, or a legitimate email will get quarantined.  If this happens frequently, you can create your own block list and safe list to block or allow any address you desire.  The easiest way to accomplish this is to log onto   and click on "Options" located at the top right corner of the page.  You may select "Safelist" or "Blocklist" depending on your needs.  Alternate instructions may be found here:  How to Release-Add Sender to Safelist

2. Report on-campus spamming.  If you receive spam from a UTEP address, please report it to our office.  To report spam, please follow these instructions:  How to Report Spam
   Note: reporting spam will not necessarily prevent it from happening again.
3. If you receive a threatening email, please contact the   Information Security Office  or contact the   UTEP Police Department  directly.
4. If you are hosting a webpage with your email address posted on it, or are hosting a bulletin board or other type of open forum, you can use or adapt this    to help prevent your email address(es) from being harvested.
