Military Tuition Assistance (Federal and State)
Federal Tuition Assistance
Federal Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. The Department of Defense (DoD) has given each service the ability to pay up to $250 per semester credit hour of the actual cost of tuition (does not include fees) and $4500 per Fiscal Year (1 October – 30 September). Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process, and restrictions. Check with your respective Service/Branch Education Office for eligibility and enrollment requirements to ensure you make an informed decision.
Using TA
Obtain approval to use TA from your Education Services Officer (ESO), military counselor, or Service prior to enrolling.
After registering for classes at UTEP, submit your TA Request(s) for each class through your respective branch portal.
- Army TA users must contact the Education Institution POC to ensure your Course Enrollment(s) are uploaded into ArmyIgnitED. Once Course Enrollments are visible, Request TA. The POC is Mr. Daniel Medrano, damedrano4@utep.edu.
-
Army and Air Force: Approved TA Authorizations/Vouchers are automatically received.
-
Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard: Email a copy of your approved TA authorization form to Mr. Daniel Medrano, damedrano4@utep.edu. Include your full name and UTEP Student ID.
MSSC TA representative will process your TA authorization in accordance with established procedures.
Paying Tuition
The university's Student Business Services office will apply tuition coverage to your tuition bill in the amount authorized on your TA authorization. You are responsible for paying any remaining tuition balance after TA posts to your tuition bill.
CH. 1606 and Tuition Assistance (TA)
On May 4, 2021, the Department of Defense issued a new policy approving the use of concurrent receipt for Federal Tuition Assistance (TA) and the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve Education Benefit (MGIB-SR). As a result of this new policy, Reserve Component Service members are now authorized to receive both TA and MGIB-SR benefits concurrently when enrolled in a program of education that is half-time or more.
