UTEP Biological Sciences Department Doctoral Programs
Ph.D. in Biological Sciences department
Priority Application Deadline: December 1, 2024
Application Deadline: February 1, 2025
The Department offers two Ph.D. degrees, one in Bioscience and a second in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é's location in the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez metroplex, which has a population of nearly 2 million people, presents environmental challenges and health problems characteristic of both industrialized and developing societies. The majority of Ph.D. research programs in the Department are focused toward the biomedical and environmental problems of the region. Our goal is to prepare students for research on the pressing problems of the region and the nation, with an emphasis on (1) the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, (2) the toxic and carcinogenic effects of environmental pollutants, (3) neurological and metabolic disorders, and (4) environmental biology.
The Biology Building currently contains some 48,000 square feet of teaching and research space, and the Biosciences Research Building is a 70,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility housing research laboratories, core facilities in cell culture, molecular biology, and protein characterization, a computing center, and auditorium.
We provide students a comprehensive program of both course work and research designed to prepare them for an academic or industrial career in biological sciences.
Financial support is available for qualified applicants through fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships.
Beginning for the 2023 application deadline, the GRE test score is no longer required. GRE test scores can be provided as an optional consideration.
Applications for both programs are submitted through the Graduate School.
