Dr. Howard Campbell
Howard Campbell is a professor of cultural anthropology at the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He is the author or editor of six academic volumes, including a 2009 book from Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Texas Press called “Drug War Zone: Frontline Dispatches from the Streets of El Paso and Juárez.”
Dr. Campbell received his Ph.D. and two Master’s degrees from the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Wisconsin. He also received a B.A. from the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Idaho.
Dr. Campbell is a specialist in Latin American Studies with a primary focus on Mexico. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork among the Zapotec people of Oaxaca, Mexico at various times since 1982.
His academic expertise is concerned primarily with ethnicity, political anthropology, social and intellectual movements, U.S.-Mexico border culture, and drug trafficking.
Dr. Campbell has been a professor at UTEP since 1991, and was chairman of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at UTEP from 2014 to 2023. During the period of 2018 to 2023, Dr. Campbell is the Endowed Professor of Western Hemispheric Trade Policy Studies at UTEP.
