Dr. Gregory D. Schmidt
Gregory Schmidt is a Professor of Political Science. Prior to coming to UTEP in 2008, he earned his Ph.D. at Cornell Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é and taught at Northern Illinois Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é.
Dr. Schmidt’s teaching and research focus on comparative politics, especially in Latin America. He has a longstanding interest in Peru, where he has conducted research and taught in leading universities with support from the Social Science Research Council, Fulbright fellowships, and other grants. He has published extensively on Peru in prominent journals and prestigious presses, dealing with broad patterns of development and democratization, as well as complex electoral systems, intricate executive-legislative relations, and diverse decentralization initiatives. He served as co-chair of the Peru Section of the Latin American Studies Association in 2003-04 and as the chair of UTEP’s Department of Political Science in 2008-14. He also regularly teaches the introductory course on American (U.S.) government and politics.
