UTEP UTEP World Music Ensembles: Layali Al-Sham
The UTEP Department of Music offers the unique opportunity for a Middle Eastern musical experience through the ensemble, Layali Al-Sham. The ensemble, founded in 2010, is directed by Professor Andrea Shaheen, who specializes in Arabic music research and performance. Instrumentation varies from traditional Western classical instruments such as the oboe to Middle Eastern classical and folk instruments such the ney and oud.
Layali Al-Sham meets on a weekly basis in the Fox fine Arts building. Sheet music literacy is not required; Arabic music requires good listening skills and memorization. “Ahlo Sahla!”
