Welcome to UTEP an emerging institution and workplace of choice. Below is a step by step guide that will assist you as you begin to work at the university.
Before your first day
Pre-Employment Screenings
Employment at UTEP is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check prior to offer date. your department’s recruitment consultant will work closely with you to process the necessary forms to complete the screening.
Pre-Employment Packet
The Pre-Employment Packet must be filled out by the hiring department and sent to the HR Transactions Center before start of employment. Please inform the employee they will need to bring the following documents:
- Signed original Offer Letter
- Work Authorization Documents

Faculty, A&P, and Graduate Benefit Eligible
This Packet is for all full-time Faculty, and Administrative and Professional (A&P), and Graduate student employees that are eligible to receive benefits. Benefit Eligible employees are employees who have been appointed to a position of 20 hours or more and are assigned to work at the university for more than four and a half months.

Classified Benefit Eligible
This packet is for all full-time classified employees that are benefit eligible.Benefit Eligible employees are employees who are appointed to a position of 20 hours or more and are assigned to work at the university for more than four and a half months.

Non-Benefit Eligible
This packet is for part-time classified employees who are appointed 19 hours or less, part-time faculty, and student hourly employees who are non-benefit eligible.
New Employee Orientation
New Employee Orientation is designed as a transition for new employees into the UTEP workforce and provides resources that support employee success. New Employee Orientation is required within the first 30 days of employment and is usually held on the first and third Monday of every month. New Employee Orientation begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and will end at approximately 3:00 p.m. The orientation is held at the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center (Building #48), it is located on Wiggins Way across from the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Library (Building #111). The orientation will take place in the Conference Center’s Training Room located directly to the right of Quiznos. During this orientation, departments within the university will be presenting important information about the organization’s infrastructure. Participation in this event satisfies various compliance training requirements.
Benefits
During your visit to Human Resources you will be provided with a Group Benefits Handbook. Please note that benefits elections must be made within the first 30 days of employment.
If you plan to enroll any dependents, please bring copies of the following supporting documents:
- If married and planning to enroll your spouse: Marriage certificate, date of birth, and social security number are needed.
- If adding child(ren): Birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) are needed
Obtain your EMPL ID
Your department will receive this number as soon as you complete your new hire paperwork in Human Resources. This is your employee identification number. If you have previously applied or been employed at UTEP, you may already have a EMPL ID.
Parking Permit
In order to receive a complimentary 30-day parking permit, present your offer letter or a copy at the Office of Parking and Transportation (Academic Services Building, Room 122). Building #38 on .
