This page provides resources for graduate students who seek funding outside of the university to supplement their educational, research, and professional development efforts.

The Graduate School offers resources designed to support in identifying external funding sources and developing competitive applications. 

Before you apply for external funding, let us know by emailing GradFund@utep.edu. The Graduate School staff is available to provide support, resources, and consultations throughout your application process. Dr. Maryanne Long, the Director of Postdoctoral Affairs and Graduate Fellowships for the Graduate School is dedicated to assisting you. Contact: mlong3@utep.edu.

UTEP Emergency Aid
directly support graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor. Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Follow this  for more information regarding application requirements. Students should submit their expression of interest and application materials to the Graduate School by Wednesday April 23, 2025. 
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program provides funding for Ph.D. candidates in the physical sciences to conduct part of their thesis research at a U.S. DOE National Laboratory. Applications to the program require a research proposal prepared by the graduate student under the supervision of their Ph.D. thesis advisor, and the deadline of the current solicitation is May 7, 2025. Mexico's Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation ( offers postgraduate scholarships available to persons of Mexican nationality admitted or enrolled in a face-to-face program of Master's or doctorate degrees abroad in priority areas of science and humanities, although it is open to several disciplines. UTEP is a participating institution. Read more information requirements and application materials in English and Spanish. Deadline to apply: May 23, 2025. 
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds the Holistic Design National Research Traineeship Programat UTEP. This opportunity is available for M.S. and Ph.D. students. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for funding and tuition support but any graduate student is eligible to apply and participate in the program. More information, including the application, can be found . Application deadline: July 1, 2025. 
The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) provides successful applicants with three years of funding for a research-based Master’s or PhD program in a field supported by the NSF. This award funds the researcher, not the research project, so it may be used at an accredited U.S. university of the recipient’s choice and provides them with the creative freedom to develop their own research agenda. 
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides successful applicants with fellowships for research, teaching, or Master’s study in over 140 countries worldwide. It is also an opportunity to represent the United States overseas as a cultural ambassador and to share your perspective on the American experience. 
The Office of Student Fellowships and Awards and the Graduate School's Director of Postdoctoral Affairs and Graduate Fellowships assist graduate students with the NSF GRPF and Fulbright application processes. 
The Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Illinois Urbana-Champaign maintains a robust and user friendly database that is easily curated based on your positionality.
The Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of California, Los Angeles hosts a list referred to as GRAPES that contains more than 600 awards that they have compiled.
