Help Support Multilingual Learners

The Graduate Certificate in K-12 Bilingual Education is fully online, 12-credit program that provides intensive training for teachers to serve K-12 emergent bilingual students (English learners) in Bilingual Education and Dual Language classrooms, as well as in other content-area classrooms. Coursework in this certificate program emphasizes the practical application of current theory, research and pedagogy in Bilingual Education and Dual Language instruction, with particular attention to first and second language acquisition processes, linguistic diversity, translanguaging pedagogy, biliteracy, and the design and implementation of culturally sustaining bilingual education curriculum and practices.

As a student in this program you will develop a critical perspective and gain deeper knowledge in Bilingual Education theories and pedagogies. The K-12 Bilingual Education Graduate Certificate program provides the content knowledge base needed for currently certified elementary, middle school and high school teachers who wish to seek Bilingual Education Supplemental Certification in Texas or their home state.

All courses in this graduate certificate may be applied to the M.Ed. in Bilingual Education at UTEP.

Course Overview

The 12-credit online K-12 Bilingual Education Graduate Certificate program requires you to successfully complete 4 master’s-level courses.

Program Coursework

Focus on the discourse of diverse paradigms in Bilingual/ESL Education. Discuss current pedagogical, theoretical, historical, legislative and other issues in the field. Identify program models in Bilingual/ESL Education, including their philosophical foundations, instructional frameworks, and the planning and design of program evaluation.

Create learning environments that foster the development of academic language and literacy considering the Spanish language and its conventions. Analyze and develop academic discourse in Spanish in the areas of mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts. Integrate language and content area objectives in their teaching in Spanish. This course includes the integration of bilingual/multiculture literature throughout the curriculum. Course taught in Spanish.

Identify principles, problems, and issues of primary and second language acquisition, specifically the relationship between the development of these languages, to facilitate and promote literacy/ biliteracy. 

Educators must be knowledgeable about creating learning environments that foster the development of academic language, particularly among bilingual students and English language learners. In this course,you will a) develop an understanding of language and literacy as simultaneously linguistic, cognitive and socio-cultural phenomena; b) use functional theories of language to understand language use in academic settings, c) build awareness and expertise in recognizing and analyzing academic language, and d) create pedagogical approaches to build academic language, with an emphasis on Dual Language Settings.
