36th Great Minds in STEM Conference
In November 2024, about 128 students from UTEP's Computer Science department had an exciting experience at the 36th Great Minds in STEM Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, which took place from November 6 to 9. During this event, they had the chance to connect with peers, attend professional sessions, present their latest research to experts in STEM fields, and engage in technical competitions like the CAHSI Data Analytics challenge and the Cyber Security Hackathon. Students also participated in other CAHSI sessions such as the Financial Literacy, Machine Learning Workshop, Cybersecurity workshops, problem solving, and tips for interviewing as well as the GMiS Career Fair.
During the Student Leadership Awards Show, UTEP CS students were awarded in the following categories:
- CAHSI Hackathon-Advance
2nd place: Jesus Lopez, Brian Rodiles, and Alejandro Rodriguez
This year’s competition included almost 225 participants.
Furthermore, the 2024-25 cohort of CAHSI scholars and advocates was announced during the CAHSI Luncheon. The following UTEP CS students were recognized:

Google CAHSI Dissertation Award
During the CAHSI Celebration of Research, Kristalys Ruiz-Rohena (mentor, Christoph Lauder) and Albert Alvarez (mentor, Chris Kiekintveld), were honored with the Google CAHSI Dissertation Award. This prestigious award includes $25,000 in financial support for qualified Hispanic doctoral students at CAHSI institutions in their final year of studies.
