Student Opportunities
President Diana Natalicio Environmental Internship
Through gifts from President Diana Natalicio and the Rockefeller Foundation, an endowment has been created at UTEP to support environmental education through funded internships for UTEP students. The goal of the internship program is to provide UTEP students a professional experience in research, education, and/or outreach focused on environmental science and/or “real life” environmental issues, especially in the border region. The long-term intended outcome is that the number of UTEP students choosing to undertake graduate studies or a career in environmental science or related fields will increase, and/or that students will be better prepared to enter graduate school or professional careers in environmental science and related fields (i.e. engineering, social sciences, health sciences, policy, and communications).

The Ralph Martinez Travel Grant and Renewable Energy
This travel grant is supported by an endowment named in honor of the late Dr. Ralph Martinez, UTEP graduate (1966 and 1968) and El Paso Electric Distinguished Research Professor of Energy Systems in the College of Engineering at UTEP in 2012-2013. It will support any undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate student to attend a professional conference in the area of renewable energy (i.e., solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy). Recipients can come from any department in the College of Engineering and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. The travel grant may be used to attend a professional conference anywhere in the continental United States. Recipients will be selected based on merit and their professional goals statement. The professional goals and interests of the recipient will reflect Dr. Martinez’ lifelong dedication to improving energy use in society and reducing its environmental impacts. CERM will manage the travel grant funds, conduct an annual open solicitation for applicants, and manage a process for selecting the recipients.
