TITLE: Associate Vice President for Advising & Student Services

Heather Smith is the founding Director of the Miner Athlete Academic Center (MAAC), the first academic services center for student-athletes at UTEP. Through the MAAC, Smith has led efforts to improve academic success and personal development by providing comprehensive academic and eligibility services to student-athletes. For 18 years, Smith has been committed to empowering UTEP student athletes to believe in the value of higher education and earn college degrees and in 2014, she received the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Texas at El Paso Distinguished Achievement Award for Service to Students. In 2016, Smith was named Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs to help lead the institution’s vision for improved and enhanced student success at UTEP.
Originally from New York, Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in English and American Literature, and her PhD in Rhetoric & Composition. She has one grown son, Decker.
