Protecting Your Identity
Identity theft is when someone uses your personal information, like your name, Social Security number, or your credit card number, to commit fraud. It can start with a lost or stolen wallet, stolen mail, a data breach, computer virus, "phishing" scams, or paper documents thrown out by you or a business. Identity thieves may use your information to open a new credit card account in your name and then, when they don't pay the bills, the delinquent account is reported on your credit report. Fraudulent information like this could affect your ability to get credit, insurance or even a job.
