College of Science
Study the Earth from the crust to the core. Geophysics students learn to use techniques ranging from remote sensing of the Earth’s surface to geophysical imaging of the Earth’s interior to study earthquakes, volcanoes and more. UTEP's extensive geophysical equipment inventory and computational facilities allow students and faculty to collaborate with universities and government agencies throughout the world.
Work with the CyberShare Center of Excellence to create 3D Earth models
Use equipment such as broadband earthquake sensors, gravimeters and magnetometers in the field
Students can present research at major national geology conferences
Aaron Velasco, Ph.D., is the state seismologist of the Railroad Commission of Texas and was recently appointed to the TexNet Technical Advisory Committee. He is committed to helping students conduct real-world work in geophysics. His student teams have visited areas throughout North and South America that have experienced earthquakes.
The training geophysics students receive in geology, geophysics and computational techniques make them highly adaptable to the changing economy and societal needs. UTEP graduates find employment in resource extraction, environmental and engineering consulting firms, government agencies and academic institutions.
