Dr. Charles Ambler
Professor of History
Charles Ambler Professor Emeritus and UTEP Ombuds Representative. His research focuses on 19th and 20th century Africa. Recipient of the PhD in African history from Yale Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é, he has authored or edited three books. His most recent publications include the collection, Drugs in Africa (2014). He is also the author of a series of essays on mass media and popular culture in Africa and on alcohol and drug use on the continent. His study on “Popular Films and Colonial Audiences” was published in The American Historical Review. Ambler’s research has been supported by a Mellon Faculty Fellowship in the Humanities and by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has been a visiting scholar at the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Oxford; the School of Oriental and African Studies, Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of London; the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é of Zambia; and Nairobi Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é. In 2010 he was President of the African Studies Association.
