Preparation for the First Day and Week
Every department and every position is different. The following outline can be used to craft a schedule for your new employee's first day and first week, and can be customized to your unique needs. But keep in mind that every new employee deserves the chance to have a structured training plan, to ensure they become a productive UTEP employee:
Review New Employee Handbook or Welcome Material.
Assign "buddy" employee(s) to assist with general questions.
Review key policies.
Review general administrative procedures:
Office/desk/work station
Keys
Mail (Incoming and Outgoing)
Business cards
Purchase requests
Telephones
Building access cards
Conference rooms
Picture ID badges
Expense reports
Office supplies
Tour of facility:
Rest rooms
Mail rooms
Copy centers
Fax machines
Bulletin board
Parking
Printers
Office supplies
Kitchen
Coffee/vending machines
Water coolers
Emergency exits
Introductions to team and department staff (During tour, but also should have meeting invites sent out ahead of time to key personnel or management)
Review initial job assignments and training plans. (Training Plans should be time-bound, and finalized before the new employee begins)
Review job description and performance expectations and standards.
Review job schedule and hours.
Review payroll timing, time cards (if applicable), policies and procedures.
Review hardware and software (don’t assume employee is proficient with all):

Intranet
MS Office suite
Internet
Databases
Data on shared drives
Copier
Fax
Scanner
Printer
