STEM Educator Series on Student Interactions (SESSI): A Visual Tool to Counter Racial Microaggressions and Promote Inclusivity in STEM Environments
National Science Foundation (NSF) - $623,267
Project Focus and Goal
The purpose of this project is to promote racial equity in STEM education by addressing racial microaggressions in STEM college settings. The objective is to use design-based research to develop a tool for countering racial microaggressions in STEM. Through a rigorous iterative process, the project will generate a graphic series aimed at educators to model microaffirmations (inclusive behaviors) that substitute for microaggressions.Significance of the Grant
This project is an innovative approach to reducing racial microaggressions in STEM by illustrating students’ experiences. It demonstrates to STEM educators how to implement inclusive behaviors in their classrooms and other academic settings. This is a step toward enhancing inclusive STEM environments that support aspiring Hispanic and Black scientists and engineers.Project Collaborators
Dr. Penelope Espinoza (PI) from the College of Education, and Dr. Karina Canaba (Co-PI), COURI Director, will collaborate with the talented duo behind DukesComics, Dr. Elvira Carrizal-Dukes and Ronnie Dukes. They will also work with a team of UTEP staff and students to implement the project.Excitement Surrounding the Grant
“I’m excited about this project because it offers an opportunity to connect with undergraduates about their authentic experiences and promote inclusive STEM settings using a novel, creative approach.” – Dr. Penelope Espinoza.
